MODA monitors flexible risers in the pre-salt fields

A pioneering technology that is part of a set of solutions used by Petrobras in the development of the pre-salt fields. MODA (Direct Optical Wire Monitoring) has become an essential tool in offshore hydrocarbon production operations.

More than 200 MODA Spyhole systems have been supplied since 2013. This technology permits real-time monitoring of flexible riser integrity in offshore pre-salt platforms.

MODA Retrofit
Ouro Negro also supplies MODA Retrofit for the inspection of flexible risers that are already in operation. The eight MODA Retrofit systems installed since 2009 in the Campos and Espirito Santo basins, have enabled the technological improvement of this solution.

The technology provided by Ouro Negro and licensed by Petrobras, will help oil companies monitor the integrity of equipment that is crucial to their offshore activities, minimizing risks and ensuring the safer operation of their assets.

“The MODA generates real-time information (MODA ANALYTICS) about the conditions of the flexible risers that transport the fluid (hydrocarbons) to the SPU, enabling a diagnosis to be performed of the integrity of this equipment, which is strategic in offshore operations. It meets the needs of oil companies that are seeking to reduce costs and minimize risks without impacting production. An industry 4.0 technology that supports operators in decision making”, says Bruno Sapha, Ouro Negro’s Monitoring Systems manager.

MODA won the ANP 2014 Technological Innovation Award and the Distinguished Achievement Award OTC 2015 and is one of the ten pioneering technologies used by Petrobras in the pre-salt fields.

New Robotics Business Unit

In line with its technology strategy and industry 4.0 vision, Ouro Negro created a new business unit to meet the oil and gas sector’s growing demand.

This unit is devoted to the development of solutions using autonomous robots for inspections and operations in wells and subsea installations.
“Robotics is increasingly becoming a strategic technology for sectors that develop highly complex and risky operations, such as the oil and natural gas industry, where the demand for data analytics tools is growing continuously. These technologies are essential to the development of solutions that seek to increase operational efficiency and safety, minimize human and environmental risk while, at the same time, reducing time and costs”, highlights Eduardo Costa, Ouro Negro’s CEO.

Created by the incorporation of Insfor, a Brazilian robotics pioneer, the Robotic Systems unit adds a portfolio of robots to Ouro Negro’s products. Three inspection robots – Hazmag, Simas and Tatuí – will be present at OTC Brazil & Rio Pipeline 2017.

“The Simas robot was used during the welding of risers and some other P-55 platform structures, in addition to pre-salt projects in the Sapinhoá and Cernambi fields”, explains Julio Guedes, manager of Ouro Negro’s robotics division.
